Second Wind Marks 25th Anniversary of Providing Advanced Technology
and Software Solutions

May 2005 — This month, Second Wind Inc. marks 25 years as a leader in providing electronics and software to the wind energy industry. Over the past quarter century, the company has grown by helping customers worldwide realize value from the wind's energy.
Leaders in the wind industry use Second Wind products to prospect for the best wind power sites, to help locate the wind turbines, and to manage the turbines once they are installed. The company's Nomad 2 data logger is its third generation wind data logger, and has achieved recognition around the world. Second Wind's supervisory control and data acquisition system, the ADMS, is the world's leading third party windfarm monitoring system and is installed in nearly six thousand wind turbines, reaching the three-gigawatt mark this year..
Walter Sass and Kenneth Cohn, the company's founders, targeted the wind industry from the company's very inception. "Our best ideas come from our customers," said Walter Sass, company President, "and after 25 years in the industry, we've forged long-term relationships with people in every facet of the business." Second Wind began operations in 1980 when Walter Sass and Kenneth Cohn, the company's founders and school friends, decided the emerging field of wind energy would provide an opportunity for them to turn their engineering skills to benefit the environment.
The AL-2000 data logger was the company's first product, introduced in 1981. Designed expressly for the needs of the wind industry to measure potential windfarm site conditions, the AL-2000 operated at remote locations for extended periods, encouraging long-term siting studies. Sass and Cohn quickly demonstrated the zest for innovation that has been a hallmark of Second Wind's quarter century, introducing improved models including the Nomad 1 and Nomad 2 data loggers which have been installed in over 45 countries and on all continents.
In 1985, Sass and Cohn identified a need in the industry for a monitoring system for windfarms that would allow the customer to view a collection of turbines as a single power plant. The Second Wind System was quickly adopted by leading wind energy developers in the USA. In 1991 Second Wind sought and won a research contract from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to develop a next-generation windfarm monitoring system, the Advanced Distributed Monitoring System (ADMS). In 2004, the ADMS was recognized by the American Wind Energy Assocation with a Technical Achievement Award.
Most recently, the company has been implementing the latest networking technologies with the new Linux-based, Ethernet-capable CTM/4 for the AMDS, and Modbus and Wi-Fi connectivity for the Nomad 2.
