Second Wind To Manufacture 3-Cup Anemometers

Calibrated and Uncalibrated Versions Provide Options to Wind Energy Industry

Somerville, MA – Customers who need wind assessments will now have a second source for 3-cup anemometers, as Second Wind announces a new model C3 anemometer, with material and manufacturing improvements over previous models.

Benefits of the Model C3

The Model C3 is designed for durability and reliability, with new materials and a manufacturing process that is RoHS-compliant, involving no toxic metals. While its characteristics are similar to the popular 3-cup anemometer Second Wind sold previously, it offers the following benefits:

  • Alternate Source - Second Wind is manufacturing the C3 to precise standards, providing another supplier with an improved version of the popular 3-cup design used in most wind assessments for decades.

  • Performance Validated – Multiple tests -- including performance data from hundreds of C3 units already in the field, and detailed wind tunnel comparisons involving hundreds of units from the supplier we used previously confirm that the C3’s performance is virtually identical to the industry’s top-selling product.

  • Tougher Plastic Unlike its main competitor, the entire model C3 is made of Lexan, a strong plastic that makes it more resistant to breaking during installation. A vinyl boot is used during testing to cover the wiring underneath the cup body that affects the wind flow around the sensor. Both the base and boot will be produced in a distinctive Second Wind blue.

  • Individually Serialized and Date Coded – Laser etched unique identifiers allowfor ease in tracking and a way to trace problems in the data, or if an anemometer needs to be replaced.

Second Wind Offers Choice to Customers

Second Wind will sell its 3-cup design, in both calibrated and uncalibrated versions.

The company's calibrated anemometers are tested at the highly respected Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Wright Brothers wind tunnel. As of August 1, 2007, another supplier selling a similar anemometer announced the transition to offering only calibrated anemometers to the wind industry, ultimately creating an increase in cost to customers and eliminating the option of purchasing an uncalibrated version.

In addition to their use in gathering weather data and forecasting, anemometers are a primary tool for wind assessment. For wind prospecting, six to twelve anemometers are placed at multiple heights on a meteorological mast. Anemometers also are used at operating wind farms to provide an independent measure of wind speed to ensure turbines are operating properly.
