Second Wind News Archives Second Wind Offers Its C3 Anemometer With Measnet-Certified Calibration, Off The Shelf
2 June 2008 — Houston, TX – Wind energy professionals who need assurance of exceptionally accurate wind-speed measurements can use the new Measnet Calibrated C3 anemometer from Second Wind, the only company to stock anemometers calibrated by a Measnet-certified facility.
Each of the new anemometers is calibrated at the Svend Ole Hansen ApS wind tunnel in Denmark, one of seven facilities in the world approved to calibrate to Measnet standards.
Measnet, the Measuring Network of Wind Energy Institutes, is an international cooperative that serves the wind energy industry by working to ensure high-quality measurements, uniform interpretation of standards and interchangeable results. Member facilities provide calibration reports, take part in round-robin exercises where calibration results are compared to Measnet standards, and undergo third-party inspections.
With this new option, Second Wind customers worldwide have three choices of three-cup anemometers.
The new Measnet-calibrated model provides the ultimate assurance of wind-measurement accuracy. Previously, customers who need this assurance have had to place special orders or purchase the anemometer and send it to a Measnet facility.
The Second Wind C3C anemometer, calibrated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Wright Brothers wind tunnel, provides high standards of accuracy for most wind assessment applications.
An uncalibrated C3 model provides a lower-cost option for less-demanding applications. Second Wind is the only U.S. manufacturer to offer an uncalibrated three-cup device.
"For critical assessment applications, such as power projections, our customers need to be confident of exceptionally accurate wind data," said Walter Sass, CEO of Second Wind. "With this Measnet calibration option, we're making it easier for customers to benefit from the international standard of precision in wind measurement. In addition, we are the only U.S. supplier to offer a standard calibration option as well as an uncalibrated model for applications, such as redundant measurements, where the guarantee of precision is less critical."
Benefits of Second Wind Anemometers
The C3 family of anemometers is designed for durability and reliability, with materials and a manufacturing process that is RoHS-compliant, involving no toxic metals. Unlike its main competitor, the entire product is made of Lexan, a strong plastic that makes it more resistant to breaking during installation.
A vinyl boot covers the wiring underneath the cup body that affects the wind flow around the sensor. Unique, laser-etched identifiers allow for ease in tracking and provide a way to trace problems in the data, or to determine if an anemometer needs to be replaced.
The Measnet Calibrated C3 anemometer will be available later this month at a list price of $375. The C3C model with standard calibration is priced at $295, and the uncalibrated Model C3 is available for $115. Second Wind will ship directly to customers in North America; customers in Europe and Asia can purchase from their Second Wind distributor. For more information, visit www.secondwind.com.
