Measure the wind anywhere on the planet with Nomad 2 and the Iridium satellite system
3 March 2004 — Second Wind Inc. today introduces satellite connectivity for its Nomad 2 wind resource data logger. Nomad 2 loggers can provide customers with convenient, cost–effective access to wind data from remote locations unserved by cellular and landline phone systems. The wind measurement system can be installed literally anywhere in the world, and still be able to transmit the data from the site back to the office on a daily basis.
Many potential windfarm sites are in remote locations, beyond the reach of cellular service and regular site visits. The Iridium satellite service selected by Second Wind uses a system of 66 low earth orbit satellites providing complete coverage of the earth’s surface. The Nomad 2 data logger will transmit data daily, providing confidence that the meteorological station is still functioning properly. Real–time information from the data logger and sensors is only a phone call away, and if there is a problem with the equipment, it will be known immediately.
The satellite modem is installed inside the Nomad 2 data logger’s integrated steel enclosure. The modem uses Iridium satellite service. Once configured, the satellite connection can be used to contact the data logger directly from a PC running Second Wind’s Nomad Desktop™ software, to transfer data and logger configurations and view live data. The Nomad 2 data logger can also be configured to send a daily e–mail to up to three recipients, with the previous day’s data as an attachment.
The satellite modem is a relatively low–powered device, and is available with a rechargeable 10 Watt solar charging system that will keep the meteorological station and modem running indefinitely. Larger rechargeable batteries and PV arrays can be installed if necessary, for sites with low insolation.
"The satellite modem option for Nomad 2 is an excellent match for resource assessment, since both applications tend to be remote or isolated, and the equipment is inexpensive enough to meet the lower budgets of site studies," said Dan Handman, Vice President of Operations.
The Satellite Modem Package from Second Wind Inc. is available for $2,775 as an add–on to the Nomad 2 data logger. The package includes the modem, antenna, 12V rechargeable battery, 10 Watt solar panel, charge regulator, and mounting equipment. Second Wind Inc. also supplies complete resource assessment systems, including meteorological towers, sensors, and all necessary hardware. The Nomad 2 data logger is also available with worldwide GSM and AMPS cellular modems.
