Remote Collection of Wind Energy Data Now Available in North America from Second Wind

Second Wind Inc., a leading manufacturer of wind energy data loggers since 1980, is now offering its remote wind data collection system to wind farm prospectors in the US, Canada, and Mexico. This option for the Nomad® data logger utilizes the analog cellular network, and follows the successful introduction of the remote data collection Nomad for Europe’s GSM network. Remote collection of wind energy data saves money for wind farm prospectors at large and distributed sites by reducing the number of site visits and providing immediate information about site performance. Analog cellular is a cost–effective solution for remote data collection. The analog network is well established in North America and, most important, is present in remote areas where windfarms are most often located.

The remote data collection system from Second Wind Inc. is available as a complete package with solar power and a steel shelter box or as a data logger alone. The Nomad comes pre-wired with a robust analog modem and an antenna. The system is designed for low power consumption and can be powered indefinitely with a solar package from Second Wind, eliminating the need to change batteries. Included with the Nomad data logger is Second Wind’s WinSite 3.0 software for data collection and processing.

Remote data collection adds a minimal cost up front, and will reduce the costs of gathering wind energy data from several distributed data loggers. Remote communication is especially convenient at sites where extreme weather conditions prohibit site visits. Frequent data retrieval can also prevent the loss of important data when a sensor fails, allowing for immediate response to problems.

"Our remote data collection option will work just about anywhere in North America, because the analog cellular network is so widespread here," says Walter Sass, president of Second Wind Inc. "Cellular Nomad is going to save companies planning large projects money and manpower, and is already providing our customers in Europe with savings and a competitive advantage."

The analog modem connects to the Nomad through a serial port on the front panel. Data logged onto RAM cards can still be read with a RAM card reader, or downloaded in the field directly to a laptop through the serial port. The entire system can be self-sufficient with a solar package.
