Second Wind Awarded $500,000 Loan for Triton Sonic Wind Profiler

Local Legislators Jehlen and Provost Support Funding for the Company

Somerville, MA – Second Wind Inc., a software and electronics provider for the wind energy industry, has received a $500,000 working capital loan from the Renewable Energy Trust (Trust).

Awarded through the Trust’s Business Expansion Initiative (BEI), the loan will support the development and production of the Triton Sonic Wind Profiler – a new tool for sodar-based wind assessment. BEI supports Massachusetts-based renewable energy companies entering or expanding within the manufacturing stage of commercial development.

The Triton profiler was designed to address common challenges that previously limited the use of sodar for wind resource assessment. While conventional meteorological met masts capture wind data up to 60 meters, the Triton captures accurate readings up to 200 meters, in any weather, at any location, without being attended. This allows Triton customers to cost-effectively measure the wind at the heights where utility-scale turbines operate – a “blade sweep” that often reaches 120 or 140 meters – instead of using mathematical models to estimate the wind based on readings at 60 meters and below.

Second Wind President Walter Sass explained that the Triton is manufactured in Somerville and many of the company’s suppliers are based in Massachusetts.

“This loan is consistent with Governor Patrick's vision of making Massachusetts a nucleus for the clean energy industry,” Sass said. “We are using the capital to help make that vision a reality by bringing to market a locally manufactured product that promises to help support the development of commercial wind projects.”

Massachusetts State Senator Patricia Jehlen and State Representative Denise Provost have continuously supported Second Wind and played a role in the award of the loan.

“Somerville is lucky to have this innovative company that is looking to meet today’s energy needs with tomorrow’s energy ideas,” said State Senator Patricia D. Jehlen. “This loan from the Trust will enable Second Wind to continue their important work in manufacturing renewable energy technology.”

“Second Wind is a local company that has redefined 'state of the art,' when it comes to siting wind turbines,” said State Representative Denise Provost.  “I am delighted with the Trust's decision to support Second Wind's innovative contributions to clean energy.”
