 Modbus port activation for connection to SCADA
 The Nomad 2 wind data logger has a Modbus communications port that allows the logger to easily connect to SCADA systems, wireless networks, and PC-based weather station/web servers. Modbus is one of the most popular and widely supported industrial serial communications protocols, used by programmable controllers, measurement equipment, and data concentrators.
Modbus is efficient over low-speed serial communications links and there are many existing PC applications and drivers that make Modbus usable without additional programming.
The Nomad 2 has an RS-232 communications port on its interface board. When the Modbus is turned on, the Nomad 2 configures this port as a Modbus Slave port that can be polled by other equipment at various data rates. The Modbus implementation maps all Nomad 2 inputs (wind speeds, wind directions, etc.) and operational information (battery voltages, inner temperature, etc.) to pre-defined registers. The Modbus Master simply asks for the contents of a range of registers and the Nomad 2 replies with the data. The Master can also open, close, and check the status of the relay on the interface board via standard Modbus commands.
The Modbus port is completely independent of the local port on the Nomad 2's front panel, which is generally used for direct cable connection to a PC running the Nomad Desktop software package. The Modbus port is also independent of the Nomad 2 modem port, which allows for remote communications via CDMA, GSM, analog, satellite, or POTS modems.
